THE WHIROKINO HIGHWAY.

DEVIATION INSPECTED BY " PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEER. On Wednesday Mr 11. P. Eonayne (Engineer to the Public Works and Chairman of the No. 9 Highways Council) made an inspection of the proposed new route for the highway through the Whirokino. Mr Eonayne was accompanied by Messrs W. E. Barber (chairman of the Manawatu County Council), H. V. Bond (Engineer), and Mr Aitchison (Public Works Engineer .of Palmerston North), Although he did not commit himself, Mr Eonayne appeared. satisfied with the proposed deviation around/ the high ground bounding the river. It is probable that a deputation from the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, will wait upon the Manawatu County Council at its next meeting in connection with the proposed Whirokino highway deviation. The County Council's alternative proposal to raising the road appears to find general favour. It is understood that general support will be given the County Council by the automobile associations to any proposals for making the highway floodproof.
