Phar Lap Wins Craven Plate

BREAKS AUSTRALIAN RECORD THOUGH HARD HELD. GIMCRACK STAKES TO PRECIOUS (HPT. PIKE HAS A DAY OUT. Received Wednesday, 8.25 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 7. The third day of the spring meeting was continued at Randwick on Wednesday. The weather was ideal and the track excellent. The attendance was good. Phar Lap gave a splendid galloping exhibition in the Craven Plate, winning on the bit and breaking his own Australian record for the distance. Movie Star attempted to steal the race in the Members' Handicap, clearing out soon after the barrier rose, but weakened in the final tussle. The evergreen First Acre scored a minor position in the Sydney- Handicap, due to a stout finishing effort. Results: — THE SECOND HURDLE RACE. £3OO added money. About. 2 miles and 3 furlongs. Ticino was the early pacemaker and led into the straight closely attended by Nut Cup, from Merab and Havaspot. From a hard-fought finish Nut Cup emerged victorious by half a length. Time, 1.37.
