CALEDONIAN TENNIS CLUB * OPENING OF SEASON. A record attendance gathered to celelbrate the opening of the Caledonian Tennis Club’s 1931-32 season yesterday afternoon, when 80 players and friends were present, including a large number from other local clubs. Visitors were also present from Otaki, Upper Hutt, Wellington and Auckland. After expressing pleasure at the excellent attendance, the Rev. J. S. Pate, President of the Club, extended a hearty welcome to all present. He regretted that the new court w£Ps not yet ready for play, but was pleased to state that the Club’s new pavilion was far enough advanced for the purposes of the day. The speaker expressed the hope that the coming season would be a keen one and that many interesting matches would be fought. He also hoped that the true sporting spirit would predominate and the game be played for the game’s sake.
The President then declared the courts open for the 1931-32 season, Mr Pate calling - on Mrs Pate to play the first ball.
Friendly games were then indulged in for the remainder of the afternoon, whilst the ladies of the club served a very dainty afternoon t^a.
A well-attended ‘‘Flannel and Tub •Frock ’ Social, held in the evening, completed a thoroughly successful opening day.
The surface of the new court has been completed, but has to be mafked out, and it is anticipated that it will be ready for play on Saturday.
