A London cable reports the death of Admiral Sir W. H. Hudson, aged 86. He entered the navy in 1859 and served in various ships until 1896. He was Commodore at Jamaica from 1898 to 1910.
To be the youngest surviving veteran of the Maori War of 1869 is the claim of Mr"W. Delany, now 75 years of age, of Auckland, Bugler' Delany was attached to the New Zealand Native Contingent, and was in action, at Ngatapa, when he was 11 years of age.
An old resident of Wellington, formerly of Nelson, passed away on Saturday last, in the person of Mrs Mary Aitken, at her home, in Ferguson St., Wellington, at the age of 87. She arrived in New Zealand in 1864 by the ship Surat, under • Captain Dunlop. She settled in Nelson, and married there the late Robert Aitken, who predeceased her 15 years ago. At the time of her death, Mrs Aitken had lived in Wellington for 50 years. The deceased was esteemed by a large circle of friends as of a kind and generous disposition. She is survived by six sons, Messrs W. D., W. L., E., P., C. C., and N. E. Aitken, all of whom live in Wellington, and Mr K. Aitken, of Levin, as well as a married daughter, Mrs R. E. McDonald, of Lower Hutt. The interment took place at the Sydney Street Cemetery, where the graveside service was conducted by the Rev. W. R. Milne, of St. James ’ Presbyterian Church.
