The weather continues fine and sunny and there was an absence of tremors in the early hours this morning. The work of demolition is proceeding. Mr Morse, chairman of the Citizens’ Committee issued a statement declaring that owing to the influx of unemployed into Napier, the committee found it necessary to restrict entry into the borough to those on authorised business in possession of a permit to return issued by refugee or relief committees. When meeting the New Zealand publicity officer, Mr H. T. B. Drew, at the British Industries Fair, the Queen expressed sympathy with the earthquake sufferers. “How plucky they are,” said Her Majesty. “How quickly they are getting down to business, and re-building the damaged areas.” OPERATIONS OF FOOD DEPOT. The food depot which is operating in Mortensen’s Building, where those residents who need assistance in their billeting of sufferers can obtain supplies, continues to have a large number of requests made it. Supplies are now being issued for the sustenance of 86 persons, 12 having been added to the list since Saturday. In connection with the appeal from the Mayor of Palmerston North for scones and cakes each week, word has been received that no further supplies will be needed for Palmerston North. THE SEW!NG~GUILD LADIES CONGRATULATED ON THEIR EFFORTS. Yesterday, His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. Blenkhorn) visited St. Mary’s Schoolroom, whore the members of the Ladies’ Guild have been doing sewing for the sufferers by the earthquake. After examining the garments made, he congratulated the ladies on the good work they are doing. Owing to leaving Levin for a short while, Mrs Pirani has resigned front the sewing committee; Mrs P. Pink and Mrs M. O ’Connor have been elected to the committee. It has been decided to discontinue; the sewing guild in St. Mary’s IlalL from to-morrow, but tlije committee will, be in attendance on Tuesday and Thursday from 2 p.m. to I p.m., to give out and receive sewing. The committee have decided to forward all cotton garments to the places where they are required and to keep the woollen garments till later. Any other surplus goods are to be sent away after all local requirements have been met. . All refugees needing clothing, who have been billeted locally, have been fitted out, also a number who have passed through Levin. Quite a number of parcels have been forwarded Through Levin people to their friends in Napier and Hastings. APPEAL ON BEHALF OF WINTER NEEDS. The committee has decided to make an appeal to all women, to contribute one shilling each; the money to be used for purchasing material for winter garments. The money can be paid to any member of the committee.
