Taupiri Mine Secures Sole Contract for North Island Railways
1250 TONS A WEEK. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The contract for the supply of coal to the Railways Department for a period of three years has been secured by Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd. The coiv tract operated as from Monday. It is stated that the amount will be about 1250 tons per week, according to requirements. Previously the Waikato coal used by the railways was obtained from all four companies—Glen Afton collieries, Renown collieries, Pukemiro collieries, and the! Taupiri Company. Under an arrangement a certain number of tons as required were supplied each week and this wai divided among the companies according to output at a fixed price. Recently the Comptroller of Stores invited the companies to tender for the solo supply of coal and it was as a result of this that the'Taupiri Company secured the contract. The present consumption of Waikato coal on the railways is about 1250 tons a week. It is probable that this order will enable the Taupiri mine to be worked an extra day a week. At all events it is considered certain that there will be more 7‘ogular work for the 250 men employed although this number will not be increased. An announcement to this effect made to the men last week was greeted with enthusiasm as it is a considerable time since the mine worked to its full capacity.
