Mrs Ken Mitchell, East Road, who has been sufferng from influenza, has left on a health recruiting trip.

Mrs Bowler, of Buckley,, who is in hospital in Levin, is much improved, and will probably be home in a few days.

Mrs R. Harding, who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for the past two months, returned home on Friday, greatly improved in health.

The friends of Mr L. Jebkins, who is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital, will be glad to learn that he expects to leave the institution at, an early date.

An anonymous donor has handed to the Secretary of the Shannon Athletic and Cycling Club a handsome Challenge Cup to be competed for annually in a series of cycle events for boys attending the Shannon State school*' At a meeting of the committee to be held on Saturday evening the question of arranging races will be dealt with.

The Are engine purchased by the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade made its first public appearance last Thursday evening, when the machine attracted much attention by the noise of its siren. In regard to the purchase of ths machine some persons are under the impression that the Brigade should have consulted the ratepayers before making it. There was no nded for this, seeing that 'the matter- is entirely the Brigade's own affair. For some time, by hard work, they have been raising money by means of social functions, and it was from these funds they made the purchase.

The funeral ob the late Mrs J. S. Moir took place at the Shannon Cemetery on Sunday afternoon. The high esteem in which the deceased lady was held, was fully evidenced by the large number of people from far and near who paid their last tribute to her memory; also the large number of beautiful floral emblems which boro silent testimony. Prior to’ the cortege leaving her late residence a service was conducted by Mr Thos. Rowe, of Eongotea. At the graveside Mr C. Drake, of Wellington, conducted a most impressive service, Mr C. Downes (Wellington) leading the prayers, prior to whch Mr'Andrew Morrison (Wellington) rendered the solo “Fading Away Like the Stars of the Morning. ’ ’

The many friends of Mrs A. MorVanee Street, will regret to learn of the death of her mother, Mrs J. Permain, which took place at her residence Russell Street, Palmerston North, on Sunday following a long illness. Born in Nelson the late Mrs Permain lived there for '2O years before moving to Wellington where her marriage took place. Thirty-five years ago Mr and Mrs Permain came to Palmerston North where they have resided ever , since, a. fine Christian woman, Mrs Perman was closely associated with All Saints’ Church, and she was a communicant during the ministry of Revs. Harvey, Hunt, Harper, Rosher, Blackburne and Canons Faneourt and • Woodward. Her, genial nature and loveable personality 1 , won for her general esteem. . A keen and successful gardener the late Mrs Permain was, a frequent exhibitor at horticultural shows, while her exhibits in the domestic classes won numerous prizes. Her husband, Mr J. Permain has been secretary of the Manawatu Patriotic Society over a lengthy period of years. The deceased •, lady’s only daughter, Mrs Morgan, will have the sincere sympathy of her many friends in her bereavement.

CYCLE ROAD RACE.

Good weather prevailed on Saturday for the cycle road race to Tokotnaru and back for the Christie racing cycle, run under the auspices of the

Shannon Athletic Club. Fifteen riders nominated for the •event, eleven of whom face dthe starter. A fair number of the public gathered at the Post Office to witness the riders start on their journey, the first man being despatched at 2 o ’clock. There was also a good number of people at the Domain to see the finish. E. Christian (8 min.) was the first rider to reach. Tokomaru, he being followed by the limit man, J. Anderson (10 min.), the order following being E. Eolston (7 min.), D. .Richards ((5 min.), O. Tippler (6 min.), E. Anderson (3 min.), T. G. Hannam (3 min.), P. Moss (7 min.), D. Christian (2 min.), W. Hussey (ser.) and E. H. Barber (scr.) On the return journey the order underwent little change, except that D. Eichards retired from the contest at Guy’s corner, Tokomaru, while O. Tippler and J. Anderson withdrew from the race at a later stage. E. Christian was the first to show up and came in an easy winner, finishing minutes ahead of E. Eolston (last week’s winner). The next to arrive on the Domain was R. Anderson, T. . Hannam and D. Christian, who came in together and a splendid race for third position ; was witnessed, the riders flushing in ! -the order already mentioned, about , half a wheel each way separating them at the post. A minute and a-half later the two scratch men, W. Hussey and E. Barber, arrived and another good finish resulted, the latter winning by half a wheel and securing fastest time by one-tenth of a second. Some minutes later the last rider, P. Moss, arrived. The following is the '.result; E. Christian, 8 min. Time 58 min .. 1 E. Eolston, 7 min. Time 58 244 sec 2 E. Anderson, 3 min. Time 55 min. '29f sec. 3 E. H. Barber put up the fast time 54 min 13£ sec, one-tenth of a secopd better than W. Hussey’s 54 min. 13 6-10 sec. Other times were D. Christian 54 min 30£ secs, T. G. Hannam 55 min. 30 secs. The riders reported that after leaving the bitumen at Makerua, they experienced a rough ride over the loose metal. At Guy’s Corner, Tokomaru, the winner same off his machine, while the two scratch men, when, negotiatng Prior’s Hill, got bjto difficulties.
