Wairarapa Backs Prove Too Fast

MASTERTON, Last Night.

In a return home and home match played here yesterday Wairarapa Bugby representatives outclassed Manawhenua to the tune of 32 points to 7.

Despite the substantial .margin of points the game was fairly evenly contested, Wairarapa's win being due to the superior speed of the rearguard. Taken on the whole the standard of play was poor and except for the closing stages of the first spell, the game was ragged and uninteresting. Play opened quietly with a series of scrums in midfiela. Eventually Lecmesne headed a rush to Manawhenua line but Ormond cleared to half way where Wairarapa was awarded a penal* ty. Fuller landed a. splendid goal.— Wairarapa 3, Manawhenua nil. Manawhenua went to the attack and Eob-b cut through, handed to Griffon who potted a fine goal. —Wairarapa 3, Manawhenua 4.

A period of desultory play in midfield followed till Koaeh kicked through to blue 25 where Corkill landed a goal from. a mark.—Wairarapa 6, Manawhenua 4.

Soon after, Wairarapa forwawls heeled to Hart who sent his backs away a&d Stringfellow finished oil a good move by scoring well out. Fuller goaled. —Wairarapa 11, Manawhenua 4 A minute later Parker increased Wairarapa's score with an unconverted try.—Wairarapa 14, Manawhenua 4. Stringfellow was \icxt to score following a bright back move and. Fuller converted.—Wairarapa 19, Manawatu 4.

Just before half time Wairarapa added eight more points to the tally per medium of tries by Walker and Le Quesne, Fuller converting one. Half time score: Wairarapa 27, to four. The visitors' play improved in the second session, their forwards, by keeping the game tight, prevented the speedy opposition rearguard from functioning Half way through the spell G-riffen, the Manawhenua winger jut in a good run to the green line where, from a forward melee, Miles crossed. Ormond missed the kick.— Wairarapa 27, Manawhenua 7. Give and take play was the order tjll just before no-side when Corkill scored for Wairarapa and Fuller converted. The final score being Waira-. rapa 32, Manawhenua 7. Criticism From the Stand MASTERTON, Las ( t Night. By dominating play in both departments for the greater part of the game, Wairarapa representatives completely outclassed Manawhenua by 32 points to 7 in the return home and home game played here yesterday. Both sides fielded weakened teams and the result was that the game was not up to expectations. The visiting forwards took a long time to settle down and it was not till the second spell that they showed anything like true form Their inside backs were ineffective, Bramwell being the weak link. Had he and Ormond changed places the combination Avoukl have been greatly improved. The wingers Moffatt and Grifi'cn were impressive but were starved for the greater part of the game. Griffon in particular showed a rare turn of speed. His potted goal was a gem. Robb and Ormond got through a lot of defensive work.

Corkill was the best back for Wairarapa'while Le Quesne and McCalmont were the pick of the forwards. The packs were evenly matched though the visitors were superior in loose scrummaging They also used spoiling tactics effectively more especially in the second spell when Wairarapa scored only five points. Miles and Henry were solid grafters &.mong the visitors forwards, the former notching their only try. Despite the substantial margin of points in Wairarapa ' s favour, the game was fairly evenly contested. The visitors did not make full use of opportunities that came their way, an instance being when Bramwell threw away a certain try by failing to take a pass from Shapleski when right on Wairarapa's line. The visitors'! defence, however, was a feature of phe game. They tackled solidly throughout and many a dangerous passing bout was frustrated through sure tackling. To sum up it must be said that Manawhenua, With obviously a weak' team, stood up to formidable opponents well. Wairarapa, both back and forward, were right on the game and from the outset set a hot pace In the second session especially did the visitors perform well by keeping the score- down.
