TAIL-ENDEKS STAND UP TO DEMON DELIVERIES

WELLINGTON, Last Night. The second day’s play in the Plunket Shield match on Saturday was fulls of fluctuations, which kept the interest of the 4000 spectators keyed up to a high pitch. The first high light came in the very first over of the day, when a rising ball from Henderson rapped McCoy so j severely that he could not continue and Auckland’spinnings thus closed with the addition of a no-ball by Henderson, to the team’s overnight total of 432. The opening of Wellington’s innings was highly sensational, as Matheson bowled with such devil that he had Foley and Lowry both caught behind the sticks by the time seven runs were on the slate. Anthony supported Matheson so ably that the Wellington batsmen came and went in rapid succession. Six wickets w’ere down for 41 runs but a solid century by McLeod and a fighting innings by Gallichan, James and Massey, enabled the homo eleven eventually to reach a total of 283. Auckland, in the second innings, has lost no wickets for 34. It opened the innings with a lead of 150. • The day was fine but overcast, with a light northerly.
