INAUGURAL MEETING OF DAIRY COUNCIL.

AMALGAMATED DAIRIES POLICY IS EXPOUNDED DAIRY BOARD REVISION. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The first meeting of the Now Zealand Dairy Council was hold to-day 47 companies being represented. Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of directors of the Amalgamated Dairies Ltd., presided. There were also present Mi AV. Goodfellow and Messrs VV. Crounds. J. R. Corrigan and .1. Dunlop, members of the Dairy Board and I he chairmen of 47 butter and cheese producing com panics from all part of the Dominion whose produce is being handled b\ A'lualgamated Dairies Lid. The total quantity of produce n-pre seated by the gathering was valued a! £0,500,0(H). The tonnage of produce amounted to butter, I! 1,000 tons; cheese, 11,000 tons. The .Mayor (Mr G. A. Troupj extended a cordial welcome t.o the conference ami wished it success in its deliberations. Mr AV. flood f allow said A inn !ga mat fo: Dairies would continue its policy of co operation with Tooley Street agents on exactly idle same system as hitherto a.nd would progressively open selling floors throughout, the United Kingdom. These selling floors would receive small consignments direct from New Ze-aland and would receive supplementary support from London stocks. The main

objective of orderly marketing was, to endeavour to lift the price level to the Ugliest possible average figure. They bad no intention of endeavouring to extract from the market an artificial price. That was impossible. They could only endeavour to got the maximum price by close organisation and eliminating unnecessary profits between the price paid by the retailer and the price paid to the producer. The second main objective to co-ordinate the marketing of Empire produce. In the election of directors to represent the North Island on the board of Amalgamated Dairies Messrs Grounds and J. G. Brechin were elected. To represent the South Island, Mr ,T. Fisher was elected by 11 votes to 9 cast for Mr 0. T. McCallum. It was unanimously resolved: “That this Dairy Council supports and encourages the gradual development of the principle of free trade within the Km pi re. “That the Government be asked to proliihii.
