NOVEMBER WEATHER.

A DECLINE IN EARTH TEMPERATURES. A month in which grey skies predominated was November, 1929; in fact, it was a month of meteorological contradictious. Cold winds blew from the north and mild ones from the south, as though the earth had reversed its position in space. Warm rains in the middle of tho month were followed by an almost sunless drought for a fortnight, during the earlier part of which a cold but drying wind came from the west. The month was quite in contrast to its forerunner, which was characterised by warm, sunny conditions that would have been almost appropriate to midsummer. So marked' was the set back that the earth temperatures showed a decline of a number of degrees. Nevertheless the country has great powers of recovery, and after the rains with which November closed, the appearance of pastures and gardens gave littlo indication of the adverse circumstances they had encountered. The mean temperature was slightly higher than in the corresponding month of last year, and there was an absence of frosts, of which five were recorded in November, 1928. The rainfall was just under three and a-haJf inches, spread over 15 days. The official returns, for whieh we are indebted to Mr 11. A.
