CHILD’S DEATH DUE TO SEPTICAEMIA.

PROBABLY ACCOMPANIED BY MENINGITIS.

The death of the little girl Ngatiriti Winiata, aged one year and ten months, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Winiata, of Foxton Road, was the subject of an inquest) by Mr T. Brown, District Coroner, on Saturday. The father, in his evidence, stated that the child had been healthy, and on Friday afternoon, she was with him when lie was working in the orchard. He brought her into the house about four o’clock, gave her something to eat, and then put her to bed, when she appeared to be in quite good health. About nine o’clock she became sick, and half an hour later he noticed that she was feverish. About 4 a.m. he could see that she was seriously ill. He tried to get a message through to the doctoi - by his own telephone, but found the line out of order. He sent one of his boys to a neighbour’s to ring for Dr. Thompson. The child died shortly before the doctor’s arrival.

Rangiuraki Winiata, mother of the child, corroborated her husband’s evidence.

Dr. Thompson stated that the child was well nourished and.showed no sign of neglect. He had examined the body thoroughly, and from his observations and the evidence, of the parents he was of opinion that the child had died from severe septicaemia, probably accompanied by meningitis. If he had been called when the child was first taken ill, he did not think that the child’s iaath could have been avoided. A verlict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
