SPRING RACING AT WANGANUI

Good Acceptances For Opening Day.

The principal handicap on the first day’s programme, the Marangai Handicap, has drawn a really good lot and this should provide an interesting race. The fields in the smaller events are of an exceptional size and unless there is a thinning down at starting time the River City’s course will probably provide a graveyard for the punters’ money. Quite a number of surprises were in evidence at last year’s fixture, when the fields were of a similar size, the number of well forward fresh runners and the turning course combining to make it an unprofitable meeting for followers of the favourites.

Wanganui Guineas,

The two-year-old parade which is scheduled to take place at 11. Id a.m. will be of interest in view of the Debutante Stakes on the concluding day. The maiden race is the next event which starts at 11.-Id a.m. Maiden Race. Twenty three runners are promised for the opening event and there ia plenty of form for speculators to work on. Marton form points to Juggle and Whenuatonga, while Dannevirke running suggests Potoaform, Gleuison and Retract. Pat’s Boy lias the Riccarton . trip which should benefit him while llossferry is a possibility on Taranaki running. Roundelay should bo able to hold his own in this field but it is just possible the course will beat him. His Wellington form however is above maiden class. Duellona and Equitant are entitled to respect with a preference for the latter. Potoaform is expected to win very shortly but the public will show a preference forEoimdelay * Juggle. Okehu Hurdles. The form of the fifteen runners due to face the starter in this event make it a very open race. -Glengariff has not raced recently but he is a fine jumper uid a good weight carrier. Elysiauor has had fiat racing of late and should be ready shortly while 'Novar may be able to make amends for Riccarton failures. Brigadier Bill and Peshwa have a liking for the Wanganui track and the former has raced well previously when fresh. Prince Lu who made the pace in the big hurdle race at Trcnthani must be given a chance while Fine Acre is a distinct possibility. Modern left the impression at Marton, that she would win again shortly. Thurnbcll raced at Riccarton with little success and-may he expected to do better to-morrow while Ah Wera and Lady Gay have their Marton form as a guide. It is a very difficult race and a good price can be expected. A likely pair are Fine Acre Modern. Putiki Hack Handicap. The best recent form among the 18 carded to appear in this event is that of Royal Black, who won on the opening day at Marton and carried 12.13 into 2nd place on the concluding day. A likely improver among those ho beat is Black Maire who is coming to his best form. Desert Lad scored an im-, expected victory at last week’s fixture but h" has proved an unreliable sort. Singer triumphed in a moderate field at Taranaki while Tourist ran two good races at Dannevirke for a first and second. Arrowhead and Austerity arc possibilities on flic* minimum mark. An unlucky runner during the past season was Metellus, who may now prove a payable proposition with another year on liLa age. Tourist lias form that must be respected but at the distance a better pair "look to tie— Royal Black Black Maire. Seafield Handicap. Over a distance of seven furlongs Gold Cure should do better than he did over the distance in the Marton Handicap. He is well just now. Reremoana is better class than this field and ho has a chance even with 10.2. Star Area may not be ready yet and High Fain-, tin’ and Partaga are probably in need of a race. Royal Game, if started here, is entitled to consideration, and he runs out a good seven. Raineses must be kept on the right side from now on. ■ Havering, whose form during the winter period was as good, if not better, than any other hack seen out during that season, must have some chance with 7.11. He should be able to pay hig way in open company. If there is a surprise in store it may come from Kick Off, but the form pair, in the likely absence of Royal Game, are— .. Gold Cure Havering.

Consent Prince Humphrey,

The Fields in Review. The Spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, which is scheduled to take place to-morrow and Saturday, is of special interest by reason of its programme including the first two and three-year-old classic and weight-for-age events of the season The _ Debutante Stakes for two-year-olds and the N.Z. Eclipse Stakes, w.f.a., are included on Saturday’s card and the classic set down for decision to-morrow is the Wanganui Guineas, in which only five three-year-olds are listed.

Admiral Drake, Eaglet, False Scent, My Own and Count Palatine comprise the field for the classic race to-morrow, the last named of which is also an acceptor for the maiden race. On public form, only two runners are likely to come in for consideration. Admiral Drake ran two moderate races at Dannevlrkc and improved in the last run to fourth position behind Royal Opera, Tourist and Goodwill. Eaglet’s recommendation is her narrow victory in the open sprint at the Marton meeting where, it has to be admitted, she beat a “classy” field. How she will shape over the extra two furlongs will have to be taken on trust, but the “Jamieson” finishing touch will kcep'a lot of friends on her side. False Scent raced once as a two-year-old and was unplaced. He is by the successful Hunting Song from Crisis and a stable companion to Star Stranger and Co. Ho will not bo so well supported tomorrow as My Own, whose two-year-old form was fairly good. On brooding lines Count Palatine should make a good three-year-old over a distance. He is a half brother to Martarma by Paladin and is still a maiden, having been unplaced in his only two starts last season. Admiral Drake and Eaglet will be entrusted with rhe money, with a. preference for — Eaglet. Durie Hack Handicap. Of th" fourteen acceptors listed for this race Royal Lineage possesses undeniable chances. He can gallop a

good six and won his only race this season, the concluding event at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting. Knightlike did not do any, good at Marton, but will have to be kept on the right side from now on, while Brilliant Light, if anything like his best, will haVe to be considered. Good things have been expected of Larcnc, but she has failed so far. .She is pleasing in her track essays and may be right soon. Blue Paper is an improver who will be in demand while Some Acre’s consistent running at Marton deserves support. Monalof has a second at Taranaki as a recommendation and he will have to be given a thought. He looks like being'"the dangerous one. The pair that appeal most are— Royal Lineage Blue Paper. Marangai Handicap. The principal handicap of the opening day has drawn fifteen runners. Star .Stranger and Yoma are a pair that "need plenty of work to bring them right and they will be passed over in favour of Cashier, who usually races well when fresh. Tallsker is pleasing in his track work and he should make a bold bid to-morrow. Bisox should do better at this distance, but she may be left alone until she wins again. She is getting costly for her admirers. Blimp failed at Marton, but is good enough to be given another chance. Otairi is good and Spcarmiss should be worth following shortly. The Ballinger bracket, Black Mint and Royal Game, are entitled to much respect after the Marton performances, while Maui, though beaten at that fixture, is likely to improve. It is a fairly open race with little between Cashier, Talisker, Blimp, Otairi, Blaek Mint bracket, and .Maui. Perhaps the best pair may prove to be — Blimp Talisker. Flying Handicap!. The concluding race is likely to see a surprise win as only Kaiti, Prince Humphrey, Moutoa Treasury and Oration have recent public form. Of these, the best credentials of recent date are hold by Kaiti, who raced at Riccarton for a fourth and third, and then won at the H.B. Hunt fixture. Oration on the minimum mark may prove a dangerous customer. A newcomer who is likely to be forward is Consent and he will have friends. Of those who raced 'at Marton Prijnce Humphrey, and Moutoa Treasury arc likely to show improvement, the former in particular . is worth keeping in mind. The absence , of form of the classier horses makes ; it difficult from the speculator’s point , of view and in the finish they may choose—
