ARTIE HAY PROVES PURDY'S SUPERIOR
BUT ENDS IN FITTH ROUND. AUCKLANDER RETIRES WITH BROKEN RLB. !• AUCKLAND, Last Night. A professional welter-weight boxing contest between Artie Hay, of Hastings, the New Zealand champion 301 b.) and Charlie Purdy, of Aucklond (lOst. 3i}lb.) concluded at the end of the fifth round, Purdy being unable to continue, owing to his having sustained a broken rib. The Town hall was crowded for the bout and tho spectors were very disappointed at its sudden termination. Hay did practically all tho attacking and was well ahead on points. In fact, it looked as though he might win by a knock-out.
Hay has challenged Jim Broadfoof. for the light heavy-weight title.
