EMDEN ARRIVES.
COURTESIES EXTENDED AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. With the British Hag Hying proudly from her truck and the now ironcrossed flag of Germany fluttering above her stern the cruiser Emden entered the harbour at 8 a.m., and fired a salute which was replied to from the guns on North Head. The Emden anchored in the stream and the German Consul for New Zealand, Mr W. Penseler, and the senior naval oflicer, Commaudder Clover, called on the Emden Commander, after which the Emden’s commander came ashore and called on the Hon. P. A. He la Perellc, Minister of Internal Affairs, representing the New Zealand Government. Other calls included a visit to the Mayor, General ■Staff Officers representing the northern militaiy command, and the chairman of the Harbour Board. These calls were (he only ones returned and the Captain of the Emden returned calls of the senior naval oflicer. In an in'terview with a .Star representative, the Captailn of the Emden said: “We are helping to do our best to cement good feelings between your nation and my country. As far as the war is concerned wo had to do our duty to our country just as your British oflicers did their duty (o their country. During a war we fight as every nation fights, for its rights and prestige, but after the conflict surely we can he friends as we were before the war. Many German ships came to your country and trade relations were good. 1 hope the visit of the Emden will help to re-establish the old friendship which existed. The reason fur the cruise, Captain De Laperiere '.said, was to give Go cadets on board a good view .of (lie world and make good sailors of them. All cadets served this way for one yea r.
