Members of the picket alleged that the officer, when apparently under the influence of drink, struck a picket with a stick, waved his revolver, and threatened to shoot the-picket if he retaliated. Inspector Stein, who is in charge, on the coalfields,' stated that, owing to long Watches and to work to which the police are not accustomed, one man apparently suffered a nervous breakdown. An undisguised policy of intimidation against the police and the Law Courts in connection with the timber strike is indicated in reports cf the disputes.'committee; to the Labour 'Council. C. Reeves, a prominent Communist, said that .virile action to deal with police who were acting as escorts to volunteers was being decided on in a secret conference. Another delegate stated that the attitude towards Judge Curlewis for his handling of the prosecution of a map, for assault on a volunteer was also being defined.
