COOK STRAIT SWIM.

CHOPPY SEA WILL BE ENCOUNTERED PARTY VERY CONFIDENT. . • PICTO.N, Last Night. Miss Lily Copplestone and party arrived at Pioton by Tumahine this evening and will proceed from here at about II p.m. to Cape Koamaru from where Miss Copplestone will commence her attempt to swim Cook Strait. On the trip across in Tamahine, the sea w'as more choppy than rough, there being a considerable amount of spray on the crests of the waves but the swimmer expressed the opinion that she could master sul;h a proposition. Dr Kidson, in a weather report despatched to the party at 4.30 this afternoon stated: "Expect fresh to strong north-wost to . west winds, moderate to rather rough seas, and some showers.” The party is in excellent spirits and Miss Copplestone is very confident. She said the predictions were even slightly better than she had expected. Local interest in the event is keen and while the majority of people with whom the matter was discussed fear that the conditions will be too adverse to be overcome, there are those who think Miss Copplestone’s effort may be successful. In any case, Picton people are unanimous in wdshing her the best of luck.
