On an uncertain wicket, which i£ anything was soft after yesterday rain, Otago (78 for 6) continued their first innings in the Plunket Shield match afainst Auckland. Cavanagh (4), Galland (5) took strike to Player and Allcott, iGallahd VbvmvJate firiJt blood with a nice square leg boundary off Allcott. It was the only enterprising stroke in the first quarter of an hour. Allcott, bowling round the wicket, was inclined to swing in from off and neitheir batsman could do much with, him. Player maintained a fair length but all the same commanded respect which wa's justified only by the state of the pitch. The batting was almost as slow as that in test cricket, but up doubt the men at the crease adopted tactics which were thought desirable in a team fighting for runs. Galland drew applause by thumping Player vigorously to the pickets and shortly afterwards Cavanagh soi red two fours by placing Allcott to a fine leg boundary. One hundred runs were recorded after 40 minutes. Bowley, who replaced Allcott, tempted Galland with his slows and in the last ball of tho over Rowntree smartly stumpfed the Otago mvn (106—7—17). Monk was next in and quickly broke his duck, but succumbed to Bowley by edging him into the hands of Postles in the slips. HO—B—l. Zimmerman was the incomer. The score at noon was 115. Galland, st.
