Miss Chalk will"sing the eoster-mcnger's song "Cockles and Mussels," both in the afternoon and evening, and the Whakatane Club Juniors will give a gymnastic display in the evening. The proceeds are for the Methodist Church Trust A general meeting of the Levin Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society was held in the De Luxe Lounge on Friday night, when a statement was presented, showing that the recent production of "A Country Girl" had resulted in «. small credit balance. Grateful acknowledgment was made of special services rendered by various helpers—Miss Tresedcr, who arranged, the greater part of the dressing, Miss Ivy ■ Middlemiss, L.A.8., who war the society's pianist; and Messrs C. Cron(piest and A. H. Morgan, of Shannon, who took heavy parts and came regularly to Levin for rehearsals. x*ae meeting passed a resolution expressing hearty, .appreciation of the efforts of Mr Jess White, Int. Mus. Bac, who had originally, been appointed producer, but was" prevented by ill-health from completing his task after carrying out some strenuous preliminary work. i The following paragraph is reprinted from the Ghristchurch Star of September 22nd, 1868 (sixty years ago):— The following is an extract from a letter, handed in for publication, >ud written from ...Wauganui, on the fight at Ngutu-o-.te-manu, in the Patea district:—"l have-not "seen any dispatchis, as.tliey go down direct to Wellington, but, whatever they may state, we here now know that.the plain truth is too disgraceful to be told. After the first volley, our foi'ces, in plain English bolted! It was a regular stampede, and sauve qui peut the order of the day. You will scarcely believe me, but it "is a fact, that our retreat was so hasty and ill-m'annjged, that all ourdead officers and meu. were left as they fell. The twenty-four wounded were able to walk, and so saved themselves; but not one single wounded man was carried on a stretcher—-if he could not 1 walk or crawl along, when wounded, he was left to his fate. The men in driblets, of threes and fours, came dropping home-to their redoubt-at Waihi at all hours of the night on Monday after sunset, and about 1 p.m. McDon,nelL himself, and some thirty men, arrived there." What kind of tobacco do you prefer —mild, medium, or full? If you have been long a worshipper at the shrine of My Lady Nicotine you have doubt" less sampled all sorts of brands at one time or another, and have your ences. But have you ever tried toasted tobacco? It is quite a new idea. The leaf is carefully toasted and this process develops the flavour and aroma in quite a surprising way. It's like eating salt with nuts or mustard with beef or cheese. You can test this for yourself because the New Zealand tobaccos, now so much in evidence, are all , toasted. Hence their delightful fragrance and flavour. And unlike most of the imported brands they contain such a small 1 percentage of nicotine that they may be smoked pipe aftor pipe, "till the cows come home" without' unpleasant or harmful consequences. They won't bite the .tongue, and appeal to all' testes. J "Rivcrhead Gold" is -aromatic," "Toasted" Navy Cut'' (Bulldog) a pleasing medium, and "Cut Plug fto. 10" (Bull's Head) a fine full flavoured tobacco.—23.*
