HOW TO TUNE A SET

The more turning of knobs and dials on a radio receiver does not tune

Use your judgment and keep it from bowling and squealing, as the noises are disagreeable to others who may be in the room with you. To do this keep your oscillator on the point*, of oscillation, and as you vary your primary and secondary condensers, so also you must vary your oscillator.

Every valve receiver is a small transmit tor. If your sot squeals it is transmitted into space, with the result that your neighbours, if they happen to be listening to the same programme as you, have their music spoilt. Although it is almost an impossibility to tune a radio frequency or any regenerative set without squeals, careful observation of your tuning will enable you to minimise those noises.

When the set is tuned the incoming signals should bo clear and musical. Foreign noises twill often be due to loose connections or carried waves from, an, improperly tuned sot near by. If it is possible to locate any squeals from a neighbouring receiver you .should go along to his house and tell him of the noise he is making, and rectify it for him if ho cannot do so himself. To make sure that it is someone else who , is causing the squeals, leave your set tuned and listen for a whistle which gradually rises and falls.
