JACOB BENEFIT MATCH.

HOROWHENUA 21 v. MANAWATU 16. Weather conditions were pleasant on Saturday afternoon for the rep. Rugby match at Levin, between Horowhenua and Manawatu, played as a benefit for the popular Manawhcnua skipper, Harry Jacob, who was seriously injured in a local game on the previous Saturday. The attendance was not very large for a match between representative teams, but tickets were on sale throughout the district and many people bought them although they were not able to attend the match. The financial result will probably not be known before the Council'meets to-morrow night and the returns of ticket sales are made up, but as each side was paying its own expenses the gross proceeds will go into the Jacob benefit fund and form a substantial nucleus for assisting him over a dilficult period. The teams were as follows: Horowhenua. Graham, Roberts, Hunt, Ransfield, Westwood, Warren, Walls, Dalziell, McDonald, Poad, SaHierley, Bond, Norton, Tatana and Cole. Mar.awatu. —Naseby, Griffin, Armadio, Brophy, Goldfinch, Kells, Dew, M. Waidin, Brooks, Galpin, Parsons, Heatley, Crawford, Stratford and McLcod. "The game was a fast and open one. but there was a good deal of faulty handling on both sides. Manawatu started off with the sun and breeze behind them, and rattled up 18 points by half-time, to Horowhenua's-6. The first score was obtained as a result of the local men being penalised in a scrum, Brophy putting the ball over. After a period of loose play the visitors' tally was increased by a potted goal. Hunt opened the account for Horowhenua, receiving from a scramble and dashing across the line. His effort at goal from a difficult angle was a failure. From a free kick Brophy found the goal and made the score 10 — 3 in favour of Manawatu. Soon afterwards Galpin escaped from a melee to touch down, Brophy failing with the kick. The home forwards then took the initiative and Norton crossed over. Tatana 's kick was unsuccessful. Play returned to Horowhenua territory and from a bit of tight work L. Heatley got out with the ball and scored. Brophy converted, and half-time sounded shortly after with the scores: Manawatu 18, Horowhenua 6. The local men having the advantage in the change-over, made the best use of it, and the visiting forwards tired perceptibly. Following a pretty piece of work among the Horowhenua backs, Bansfield grounded the ball under the posts. Hunt's kick, however, was a failure. The home forwards continued to assert themselves, and Satherley scored. Hunt was unsuccessful in his attempt to convert. The tally was almost equalised through Dick McDonald gaining a try, but the kick" did not. bring the extra points. After some good combined play among the backs Westwocd passed to Hunt, who scored, putting Horowhenua in the lead, 18 to lb*. The pressure was renewed on the Manawatu line, and Poad crossed with tho ball and touched down. Roberts's Hck missed the mark. Loose play followed until the call of time and the score was not increased. Towards the end of the game Brophy, Manawatu's wing three-quarter, was hurt and had to retire/'' Mulling replacing him. • Mr E. Bevan refcreed.
