SHANNON TENNIS CLUB.

A meeting of the Committee of the Shannon Tennis Club was held on Friday last, when numerous matters concerning the welfare of the club were discussed.

The secretary (Mr. F. Murray), reported that the net proceeds of the dance held on the 16th inst., amounted to £7 13s 4d. This function Was quite a success. The ladies were thanked for their services in making it so.

The fences being in want of repair, it was decided to have same attended to immediately. Grass will be sown down in the autumn on the strip made when one fence was put back to allow more' room for back play, it being decided that it was too late to do anything in that direction this year. Opening dav was fixed for Saturday the 15th October, that being a more suitable day than a Wednesday. The question of obtaining a volley board was again discussed and the board will shortly be erected on the courts. Dissatisfaction was expressed by some members in relation to the play on the courts, it being stated that on occasions it had been noticed that the younger and inexperienced players were not receiving the courtesy due to them, so far as the play was concerned. To obviate this, it was suggested that a black-board to control the play and players might be obtained but, after discussion, it was decided that where in the opinion of any member of the committee any players should be occupying the courts to the restriction of any member or members, the committee or any member should have power to arrange the games. This will obviate the evil of an odd member having to remain seated for a considerable time without taking part in the play, when there is at least one net on the court. In other words, one of those playing may be required to stand down for a short time and give the odd player his place in the set. Messrs Picard and Humphries were appointed a committee to arrange matches for the season.

The members expressed their disappointment at the failure of the newly formed Manawatu Association to arrange inter-club matches last season and the secretary was instructed to write to the Association and ascertain the position for the coming Reason.
