PALMERSTON MATERNITY HOSPITAL.

LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONES In beautiful weather yesterday afternoon, the foundation stones of the new Maternity Hospital in Heretaunga. Street, Palmerston North, were laid by the Minister of Public Health, Hon. J. A. Young. There were many interested spectators, including Dr. T. A. Valintine (Director-General of Health) Mr W. "Wallace, of Auckland (Chairman of the Hospital Boards' Association), and members of the Palmerston North Hospital Board. Two stones were placed in position by the Minister—one bearing names of members of the Board, secretary, architect and builders, while the other was inscribed as follows: "The generosity of the public of Palmerston North Hospital district, assisted by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., in his public capacity, provided funds to enable the Palmerston North Hospital Board to erect this Home." The Minister congratulated Palmerston North on the step it had taken and applauded the effort that had allowed of the building being erected at a cost of not more than £3OO to the ratepayers. Where the public helped the hospital by voluntary contributions that, as a result, of the Government/subsidy, meant a pound saved. The subsidy granted in connection with the Home, however, had been 24s in the £1 in view of the fact that the money had been raised before the Government decided upon the/ uniform subsidy of £l. In New Zealand, Mr Young added, there was every reason to be proud of the hospitals and the way in which they were administered. In no other country in the world were the people in control and if the administration was not as it should be, then the ratepayers themselves were to blame. The hospitals were truly community institutions and every citizen had the right to enter. That right had been challenged some years ago and it was in Palmerston North that the law had been laid down that the hospital doors could not be closed against anyone. That being so, it was up to the community to co-operate in every way possible.
