TRAPPED BY FIRE.

SEAMAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Very severe bums to the' face and hands were sustained by Matthew Wishart, a seaman aged 55, through being trapped in a burning ruin in the upper storey of a wooden house at 25 Howe Street, shortly after nine o'clock yesterday morning. Wishart was in ill-health and consequently was unable to escape from the building. He was found by firemen in an unconscious state on the floor of a room, and was immediately conveyed to the hospital, where he died later. The house was tenanted by W. E. Hooton with whom Wishart lived in two rooms on the upper storey. These were extensively damaged by the outbreak.

Mrs Hooton, wife of the tenant, rushing upstairs to awaken the sleepers, roused all except Wishart, in the vicinity of whose rooms the fumes were suffocating. Wishart • could not be aroused by. calling, and his room was unapproachable. The brigadesmen found Wishart unconscious on his bed. The fire was confined to the room in which it originated.

CHILDREN'S NARROW ESCAPE IN PALMERSTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. A fire on Saturday evening seriously damaged an eleven-roomed house in Ferguson Street. Two children were in the house at the time of the outbreak, but were rescued. The house was insured for £IOOO and the furniture for £SOO. It was owned by Mrs Hosking' and occupied by Mrs East, the children's mother. Mrs Peart occupied a iiat on one .side of the dwelling.

HOUSE GUTTED AT ONEHUNGA. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association ) AUCKLAND, This Day. A fire at 1.35 a.m. badly gutted a two-storey wooden building in Queen Street, Onehunga, owned by J. T. Morton and insured for £4OO. It had been unoccupied for two weeks and the alarm was given by a person unknown. The fire was then raging on the ground fioor at the back, also in an upper room. GARAGE DESTROYED. {By Telegraph—Press Association.) / WAIPUKUEAU, This Day. ' The private garage of J. K. Paku, auctioneer, was destroyed by fire at 12.30 this morning. It contained an Oakland sedan car and a Studebaker motor lorry, also tools and a load of furniture. The value of the "garage and contents was about £4.30. The only insurances were £250 on the car and £9O on the building. The cause of the fire is unknown, but both motor vehicles were used yesterday. . RESIDENCE DESTROYED IN DANNEVIRKE.

About 2 a.m. to-day a lire occurred in a nine-roomed wooden house in Swinburn Street, owned by Jas. Livingston and occupied by W. T. Eyre, manager of a local picture theatre. The centre of the building was gutted. Mr Eyre and his brother-in-law were the only occupants of the house, Mrs Eyre having recently gone to Gisborne. Mr Eyre was shortly vacating the premises, and had been packing furniture prior to its removal. The building was insured for £9OO in the London and Lancashire office and the furniture for in the State office.
