TEN ALPINE CUMBERS ENGULFED.
TERRIBLE AVALANCHE DISASTER. LONDON, Jamiary 2. A report from Innsbruck (in the Tyrol) announces that the worst avalanche disaster for many years occurred at Zures. Ten members of a skiing party of eight Englishmen and two Germans were buried in the fall. The bodies of five Englishmen have been recovered. Th noise of the avalanche sweeping towards the valley was heard for. miles around. TWO SKIING PARTIES ENGULFED. LONDON, January 2. A later message from Innsbruck states that Arlberg, where the avalanche disaster occurred, is a famous skiing region but is suitable only for experts. It is especially dangerous now owing to the thaw following the extreme cold. This caused an enormous snowfield, half a mile wide, to break from the mountain side engulfing tw-o skiing parties from Zures. Of these, two were women, whose bodies were buried under a snowfield as high as a two-storeyed house. ' , „ Rescue parties worked in relays the whole night through by the light of flares, digging frantically in the hope that someone might be alive. ‘The faces of the victims recovered so far were calm and passive, indicating that death was instantaneous.
