N.S.W. NEWSPAPER TAX
SUGGESTED INCREASE OF BASIC WAGE (Received Friday 10.15 p.m) SYDNEY, Dec. 17. A meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Caucus, decided that Mr Lang’s Budget proposals should include a half-penny per copy tax on newspapers. Free papers ,and religious papers are to be exempt. There will also be a general circulation exemption of ten thousand copies. Coun try newspapers will be saved thereby, and the country members of Mr Lang’s party, who had opposed the tax, will be placated. Mr Lang will also a.dhere to his proposal to take £350,000 from the Main Road Board Fund, to assist him in making up his Budget. The meeting also discussed the basic wage, a. suggestion being made that the Bill should be submitted to Parliament for an increase on the wage declared by Mr Piddlngton. Indications were given that it was not intended to allow the basic wage to remain as at present, but it was decided to let the matter stand over for further Cabinet and Caucus consideration during the coming week.
