AMATEUR ATHLETICS
BRIGHT SETS UP A RECORD. FIVE MILES MOTOR-PACED. Great interest centred in the sports gathering of thp Levin Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on the Park Domain last evening, over 400 spectators being present, despite the cold weather. The loading attraction was the appearance of G. S. Bright, the well-known Wellington amateur cyclist, who set out to establish a New Zealand motorpaced record fer .five miles. This he did, in 9min. 43secs. Ho was paced by Harry Maugham, on a 2 4 h.p. Harley, and the distance was made up of 17 laps, which were covered at speeds ranging from 33 seconds up. .The 14th lap was done in 34 and the next in 35, then the pace slackened, and the last two were done iu 39 and 37. Later in the season an attempt will be made to lower Bright’s record by two cyclists, independently paced by motor cyclists, thus making a race of it. It was fount last night that Idle Levin track was good in most respects, but slightly sandy in places, necessitating a reduced, speed. This trouble will be remedied before the Boxing Day meeting.
The contested events were full of interest. The half mile cycle lace was won comfortable by McFedries, of Wellington, who rode a nicely timed race. In the mile the finish was a good one, but there was too large a fietd with 15 competitors. In the three-mile race the scratch men caught the field when there were four laps 1o go; the last lap was very fast, and a close finish was recorded. One of the best mushes seen in a foot race for some time was that in which Walker, of Palmerston North, beat Broughton, of Levin, by inches, in the 220 yards!. Mr Clark, of Aldwinckle’s, present ed, a pair of running shoes as a prize for most points in junior running before Christmas. This wms awarded last night to Ball, of Foxton, who had 35 points to date. Dcyle 'had 34, and Henderson 31. ; Following are the results: — SENIOR CYCLING.
