GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES.

Won by Penury Rose BEAUFORT STEEPLES TO EE&IE. SOIiFBRITE AND KILFANE WINNERS. EASY MONEY FOR BIRKENBLLA J CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Only four contested the Hunt Club Cup, for which Birkenella was favourite. He led all the way, eventually winning comfortably by thirty yards. Night Raid fell at the third fence, and was remounted to get third money. Uncle Bob fell a mile from home, while Ethiopian, after having a couple of lives, filled second berth. Highflown Outflies Favourites. There was plenty of support for both Miss Minerva and Serotina' in the Woolston Handicap. Flaming Ray was the quickest to begin > and she led Serotina, Uleaborg and Highflown to the turn. Miss Minerva had command as they came on to the course proper and she and Highflown then drew out from the field. In a good finish - the latter stayed on better and won by a head. Uleaborg was two lengths back, third, with Knocklyn next. Eerie Keeps Her Form. Tuki was taken out of the Beaufort Steeplechase, leaving nine runners. It was a great betting race, all the runners being fancied. Puwhero went out to make the pace and had as a companion, Frenchman, who, fell at the third fence. In passing the stand the first time, Puwhero had a big lead, and he was followed by Tigerland, Passin’ Through, Eerie, Kipling, First Line Blue Hall and Aurore. On entering the back, Puwhero t if anything, had increased his lead, but the Kennels double saw the field make up some ground on the leader. Pmvhero’s nearest attendants at the half mile were Tigerland and Passin’ Through, while both Eerie and First lane were moving up. The second to last fence proved disastrous for Puwhero, who fell. , This left Eerie and Passin’ Through in command, and running to the final obstacle, they were joined by Blue Hall. The trio took off at the last fence together, anti for a while there was a spirited duel. Eerie, over the last furlong ( stayed on best and she drew out to win by two lengths. Blue Hall dropped out at the distance and his place was taken by First Line, and he and Passin’ Through had a great fight for second, Passin’ Through eventually getting the verdict by a head. Blue Hall was fourth and Tigerland next. Rapier “Touches” Again. Of the eight starters in the Sumner Handicap, Gold Town was the best supported. They got away to a perfect start, but the favourite soon took charge and he led past the six furlongs from Rapier, Horatius and Musical. The only change at the turn was that Musical moved up into third place and whpn they entered the straight, Gold Town had a handy lead. A furlong off the poft he was

still in command, but Rapier put in a strong challenge find at the half distance had the favourite beaten. Horatius also challenged and though he boat Gold Town by a neck, he could not get to Rapier, who won by a length. Gay Life was a close fourth, with Tiff next. Penury Rose Prize Bloom. Passin’ Through was taken out of the Grand National* Hurdles, leaving a choice field.of sixteen. Nukumai was always the favourite, and he finished up carrying 1300 more tickets than Penury Rose, who was second in the order of betting. Highway and Lucullent were the next best backed. The field went away on its long journey in a good line, and Te Kawa at once rushed to the front after clearing the first fence. He led Tinokaha, Bonibrook. Highway, Nukumai, 'Sir Rosebery, and Penury Rose, while Maunga and Santiago were tailed off. In passing the stand; Tc Kawa had a big load over Nukumai, who was his nearest attendant. Next in order wer c Tinokaha, Penury Rose, Highway, ’Frisco Mail. Sir j Rosebery and Vagabond. On going into the back, Tc Kawa was still 'away out from Nukumai, who was followed by Penury Rose, Captain Sarto, Highway, ’Frisco Mail, LuculIcnt and Sir Rosebery. At the five furlongs, Te Kawa was starting to come back to his field, and he was followed by a bunch which consisted of Nukumai, Penury Rose and Captain Sarto, while Maunga was at the head of the others. Te Kawa was beaten at the straight entrance, where Nukumai look the lead and he jumped the last obstacle clear of Penury Rose, Captain Sarto and To Kawa, while Maunga was 'getting into lino with great jspecd. i.A furlong from the post. Penury Rose joined Nukumai and momentarily the favourite looked the winner, but he stopped over the last hundred yards, and Penury Rose drew out to win by a length. Nukumai was three lengths in front of Maunga. who just beat Captain Sarto for third money. Then followed Te Kawa, Boomerday. Lucullent, ’Frisco Mail, Sir Rosebery and Bonibrook. Solferitc’s Reputation Enhanced All started in the August Handicap for which the first day’s winner, Kuhio, was the elect of backers. Others to be sought after were Rehutai and Solferite. The favourite was quickest to move, but he was soon displaced by Dancing Days and prominent behind her were Kuhio, Solferite and Heisler while Potoanui was last. Dancing Days led into the straight, and she was followed by Solferite, Warhaven, Rehutai and Heisler. A furlong from the judge, Warhaven had command, but Solferite finished best and in the run to the post, won by a length. Beaumont made an effort, but could not catch Warhaven, who was two lengths to the -good. Hall Mark was fourth and Ciontarf and Clareina next. A Bachelor Gay. Though there were only five runners in the Spreydon Hurdles, it was one of the best races of the meeting. Bachelor Gay was favourite and he tore out to the front. The second j hurdle nearly upset him, for he went straight through it. He shot his jockey up on to his cars, but H. E.

Ryder made a wonderful recovery, and got back on to his seat. Down the back, three of the five raced in line I —Bachelor Gay. Many Colours and Tenterfleld. However, at the turn, the first-named drew, out and though ho was all but down at the last fence, he went on and won by six lengths from Many Colours. who was two lengths in . front of Tenterfleld. Ryder got an ovation when he returned to weigh in. Hot Fancy Scores. Kilfane was a' very hot fancy for the concluding event, the only other to carry big money being Deucalion. Mountain Lion and Waetea made play early from Boadicea and Killocra, with Serene and Deucalion last. Boadicea took charge at the half half mile and Deucalion moved up on the bend. Boadicea was still in front • ■when heads were straightened up from Deucalion and Mountain Lion, and Kilfane moved up on the outer. From then oii, there was a great race and Kilfane just got up in time to beat Deucalion by a head. Boadicea was tw > lengths away. third, and then came Mountain Lion ’ and 1 Killocia. | THE RACING IN DETAIL. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.
