THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
A GREAT RACE PREDICTED. .'Per Press Association.) Wanganui, January 4. ' The : weather is delightfully fine, with every prospect of continuing so for to-morrow’s race lor the world’s sculling championship. • Arust and Hadfleld both say they are very fit, and each man appears confident.
Hadfleld finished up his training yesterday with a steady row’ over a couple of miles, and is resting to-day.
Arnst was out twice yesterday, and again to-day, when he did a good tow over the full course. He will have a short sping to-morrow morning.
Opinions appear to be well divided as to. the probable result. The improvement that Hadfleld has recently ■made, and his advantage in age, nas made him mgny friends. Arnst is in great fettle, and should be capable of reproducing most of his old form, so a big race is expected. The racestarts at 3.30.
Wanganui. Last Night. Serious training operations for ’he world’s sculling championship were brought to a close this.-., afternoon. Arnst covered Iwo and rt-half miles very strongly. lie stopped -for" a few seconds after covering a mile, in order to avoid a floating log. Then lie went on at a solid pace, and finished really well. Hadfleld a)so did 21 miles, but .confined him sett; to a . leisurely row. He is pronounced to he in tip-top condition. To-morrow lie will be taken for a motor drive into the country by his supporters. Hadfleld will row at about 13.6, aiid Arnst at i:i.9. Both parries are very confident. if both men are fit and well, a Herculean struggle is assured.
