The attention of retailers who use wrapping paper is drawn to the following regulation under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act: “No person shall sell any food so packed that it can come in contact with paper or other material that is not. clean.” Newspapers which have been handled by readers in the ordinary course will not be considered by the Department as clean within the meaning of this regulation. The Department of Health advises that it has of late received a number of complaints ,from private individuals th|at many retailed are not heeding the requirements of the law. Such neglect is likely to be followed, by prosecutions. Not only is the wrapping question involved but there are other regulations bearing on the preparation arid storage of food and preventing its contamination from, dust, flies, rats and other vermin, also damp and foul odours, contact with unclean clothing, or with, persons suffering from infectious or communicable diseases. A laxity in many directions is reported to have developed of late, hut this will not be permitted to continue. More especially is particular care necessary at present as regards keeping food-stuffs entirely out, of reach of rats. With the possibility of a visitation of plague, all premises and materials used therein should he overhauled and nothing kept that, is not clean and fresh.
