It is understood that "a series of "monster indignationmeetings under the auspices of the Labour Party, will be held throughout the Dominion, commencing this -week,. protesting against the alleged sins and omissions of the Government generally. While returning from Whangarei to Auckland on Friday, Dr. Clcary, Roman NlJatholic Bishop of Auckland, had a little adventure. His car became bogged in flood water and the Bishop and Father Kreynborg, who accompanied him, had to wade out to terra iirma. They were held up at Hukerenui for two days before the car was rescued. Mr 11. Holland, Labour candidate for tho Wellington North seat, said he of the Government, to state the exact amount paid by the National Governmentto the Uni.m Company for the hire of its ships. Up to the end of March, 1917, nearly two and a-half milions of money was paid by tho Government for the hire of some of tlie Union Company's boats., whereas not long ago Sir Joseph Ward said the Union Company would be acquired for a million pounds. That payment of money to the Union Company for charters cainc dangerously near corruption. (Applause). It was a subsidy to the Union Steamship Company. A capable Government would have commandeered the whole of the' Union "Company's fl«fet and made it the property of the people of New Zealand.
