Correspondence 8. < — fOur correspondent*' opinions are then own; tie responsibility o r editorial oom makes siiliicipvi for the editor'* shoulder*, i MEOBLAMOAL MILKERS. (To the Editor). Sir,' —It will be of interest to mention certain statistics in oonuec'tion with the dairy herds of the Dominion : Cattle, as enumerated in 1916 show a«- inoreaise over the figures 1 for 1911 fc~ of 367,880, and it must be conceded that this is an enormous increase during the short period from 1911 to 1916. Hie number of dairy cows (in milk and d'ry) in New Zealand as 31st March, 1916, totalled 732,931. The number of cattle fall ikiinds) being 2,387,036, and our export of butter for 191S totalled 420,144cwt, while cheese r totalled 817,258cwt. The value of our butter exports for the year 1915-1(3, that ia from Ist July, 1915 to 30th June, 1916, amounted to the sum of £2,805,152. while our cheese exports for 1 that period were valued at £3,345, 314 and 1 it should be remembered that if it were not for the perfection of the mechanical mj-Mrer it would have beten an utter impossibility, for t|he daiiy farmers to have milked the > mimberof cowe necessary to 1 bring out exports of butter and cheese up to eueli a lotal with hired labor, ais sufficent labor could not have been . found in the country to 'do it. The ■ modletrn mechanical milker has biecn I so Bimplifid and stardardized that no dairy former need ,fela>r not being able to adjust is as required, and replace- ' ments can be quickly and easily accomplished, and In addition to this the manufacture (and distribution iof mechanical milkers is now such a bi'T and well-established industry in 1 tho country that no farmer need fenr ( to invest,. For illustration ;he Now ' Zoalandia mtfcWanloal milkier sold _ and distributed l by a well-known agricultural implement firm who possess denote in all main, cities, An old and, ' Palmefrston, itforth, iChristchurch. and Dunedin. with agents throughout all c the dairying district® of New Zealand )< and extras with .experts can be ob- •"

tained promptly although the latter, except for the initial installation, are seldom oa'l led upon, but stjill they can always be obtained if requi(re|d, j which is an important consideration. , Tt is just as well to admit straight away that the earlier forms ofmechanical milkers were not by any moans a success—in fact many cows and oven herds woro ruined by them, but still our inventors persisted; and if they had not persisted against bitter disappointments, ruined cows and even herds, combined with mechanical imperfections we could not to-day record the fact that their efforts liad been successful even beyond the most sanguine expectations. It should be remembered, however, that mechanical imperfection, although undoubtedly present nnd judged by th'e present dav standards very evidently, was not the onlv factor present to account for the earlier types not being a success, Much can be attributed to imperfect knowledge on the pa!rt of the users and experts, whoi did not understand that vacuum as applied to mechanical milers needed 1 to be used with discretion, and in fact the inventors themselves probably did not altogether understand what effect on the sensitive teat of a oow the application of vacuum would be. However, the later inventors profited by the records of the earlier inventors with excellent results.—l am, etc. E. ALOfA'NI). When wild winter Winds are wailing, ' In a weird, wan, woeful way, And the chill. grey twilight failing, Shortens each succeeding day, Lest l>nd colds should be your portion, Dainty summer clothes abjure; And with wise and prompt precaution Purchase Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.— Advt. 'Tie most absurd! T do declare there's funny people everywhere: cranks who harbor "tieks" ind "rats" and freaks who wear old-fashioned bats: but most amusing of them all are those who, when bad colds befall, obsolete nostrums still endure, whilst nerd -r-r vids' Peppermint Cure. Ad. >*o cold is NAZOL proof. And no cough .and cold remedy is so economical as XAZOL. Eighteenpence buys "0 doses—more than three a pennv.
