The Chronicle LEVIN. TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1917. THE WAR LOAN.

Xew Zealand's need for public moneys with which t-o continue her vigorous part in assisting Great J3r|iltain and her Allies to win the war is effectively ■set out in tlie advertisements now being [inblushed by the Government. Tlie war expenditure of this dominion now runs to £24,000,000 per annum, and the Government ,i siendeavoring this year to raise £12,000,000 in New Zealand. The amount is very large, but the money held in New Zealand greatly exceeds this amount, and the duty of the people as a whole is to see that 1 lie Liberty Loan is made a success. Viewled from the aspect of sound linancial investments the terms on which the loan is being floated are extellent; on tlie plane of patriotism, the desii'ii of lending freely to the •Slate in the present crisis of the ®rapi re doubly commends itself. Frankly, W'e have no doubt whatever that those who in those times nave been earning extia money by reason of increased revenues from war expenditure will be pleased to assist this dominion by lending it money; and for those vbo have- had no additional revenues as a iesult of the war, who yet are in sound /inancial case, there remains the inducement of duty. There is ample money held in New Zealand to allow of this large sum of money being raised without causing embarrassment to the general business of the country, and we feel confident that when tlie :ird September arrives the Finance will iind the aggregate tenders will be in excess of the amount aisked for .
