PARS FROM OTAKI MAIL. Despite the fact that bushfellers have been offered at 14s per day for wo:k 011 the MaymoTn Estate, very few were forthcoming. The Company which has had felled nearly 800 acres of bush, ceases operations for the time being in the course of a few days.

Two boys escaped from the Weraroa Training Farm on Thursday, and slowly made their way towards Paekakariki. Constable Satherley, receiving a slight clue, immediately visited that locality, and was just in time to see the lads hu'rrying across a paddock, after having entered the house of Mr H. T. Cooper, where they stole sundry articles, chiefly edibles. The constable took them back to Weraroa.

Constable Satherley made a smart arrest at Waikanae on Monday, when he took into custody a deserter named Henry Carlson. It appears- that the man escaped from the Trentbam Military camp in October, went to Palmerston, where it is said he threw his uniform into the Manawatu river, visited Otaki, and then found his way to Waikanae, where he sought safety by wotrking in the swamp lands carrying flax. Although the description given was meagre, the constable quickly recognised the man and brought him to ! Otaki. He was handed over to the I miilitary police, and in" due course will . be dealt with. by. the authorities.
