COUNTY ENGINEERS REPORT

Mr J. Malcolm's report on the county roads and bridges was aa follows :—

I o Horo Hiding. 1" the southern end of the riding I'ic repairs requited 011 the main rtin'li ll:lr " be: '» effected. if tin. weather continues good the crushing plant <>lioii>i get to To Horo next Wednesday ; not later than Thursday at any r.ite It. is nutcJi wanted as the-road between tile Otaki bridge audi To Horo is getting very bad. Something will have to bo done about the sawmiil traffic on the -Mungaone-Koi.kiorangi road ; it was reported to me on Thursday that it, was practically impassaible. I have not had time since I got the report to in-prct it, but will do so early next week, however I think tlie best tiling to do is to close it for heavy traffic for the period nllowedl by law. I regret to have to recommend thimeasure, hut it i.s no use considering Mr Campbell as lie wiV do nothing to l|) " s - I bave taken the levels for the deviation of the water-raws at Te Ho'< ami will send them on to those interested early next week.

Otoki Hiding. There i.s nothing doing in the ridiing but the usual maintenance; it is being well attended to. The contractor report. to me tint he intends starting work oil the cemetery road contract on 'Monday morning; he says the bad weather Ims caused the delay. I will be unable to get the deviation on the Waikawa Beach road! put in hand until the contractor finishes the formation of the cemetery road as he get* the use of the scoops. In company with the councillors for the riding we inspected the proposed extension of the T\uku witter .supply scheme. They will be able to give tJieir opinion of it but I can see nothing better.

AViroki no Riding. Laying crushed* metal has been the ordei of the day with nearly all the hands in the riding for the month, when the weather was good). The original contract would have been finished a'bout a week ago hut for the weather. Another tiling the Government came to our assistance with tho nr'taiiliiig of Sorrenson's road. The District .Engineer of the Public Works Department rang up and offered? £8(i that he lwd at his disposal on condition that i would withdraw our application for a grant of £100 that was made some time previously, and as T thought "a bird, etc." was better Coins 1 at once agreed to the proposal. Then to get the matter' disposed of while the crusher was at work the contractor agreed to supply the meal lor !Jd per yard less than he was getting lor supplying Heatherlea road, ii he got it before removing the machine. Tlie work is more than half done. iSome time ago we approa .'lied the Telegraph {Department and requested them to clear all the poles off the western side of the road between the Beach rood and the Builer. 'I'll is tliey agreed to and "had :hi* work done, but now they have started a new line on' the same side, that will make the footpath wc propose to form at our convenience far more expensive 1 think it would be well for tho council to pass a strong resolution of protest. 1 have spoken to the man in charge but he cannot do anything. The regradjilg of Gladstone road is getting oil well and will be finished by lieit meeting with reasonable luck. '11-.e petty contracts on the Arawhata roan Jirg now getting on very well. Tokomaru Riding. Tlie metalling contracts in this riding artf so /far moving slowly. 1 must try to push them ahead nxt week. I got the bridges filled in on the Foxtrtn road, and I have also got the footpath formed by the new lictel in Shannon. It has been a big jcb, but it is a great improvement. I sent up the grader a, week ago and had the sidles of the principal roads and streets ift and around Shannon combed off before laying • down the maintenance -metal. 1 will try and send the grader round the county where required: as soon as possible.
