The Late John Saxon

The late John Saxon, whose death at lvouuturou was rccoided in yesterday's Chronicle ,wi\& a very old settler in .New Zealand and was held in wide respect. He was burn in die town of Burton, in Somersetshire, England, in 1837, and was educated at the Tklward VI. Grammar School, Bruton. lie came from one of the oldest country families of England. His father was a .noted exhibitor of stock. John Saxon came to New Zealand with his father and family in 18513, in the shipMaori. They settled in the Nelson province, and Mr Saxon began surveying under the late Mr Cyrus Coulter, but leaving that work he went into sheep farming, and managed a. run for the late Mr Ward of Blenheim. Later he married and came to the North Island, being one of the early settlors on the Manchester block. Feildiug. He then managed a large mixed farm, close to Feilding, for Mr Wrey, of England, during which time he became a memher of the Manawatu Road Hoard and the Hfl.spit.il Board. He took an active interest in the formation of the Manawatu A. and P. Society, and was one of the organisers of the first show. For the last twelve years he has been farming at Ihakara Reserve. Kereru. Mr Saxon married the third daughter of the late Major Horneman. J.P. of Nelson, and formerly ca]>tain in the Hon. Artillery Com pany, London. He leaves three sons and three daughters. Arthur Saxon of Shannon, Con. of Ihakara and Joseph of Ihakara. Mrs Franklin Webb of Levin, Mrs Duncan of Ihakara and Miss Florence Saxon of Ihakara. His eldest son, Fred, went to South Africa with the (tli contingent from New Zealand, but died at Beira of fever. His third daughter, May, wife of Mr Ernest Smith, of Hawke's Bay. died in 1007. Mr Saxon has boon noted For his upright and honourable nature. He died after three months' of great .suffering.
