An elderly man was convicted today for making a wilfully false statement in respect to his balance at the bank when applying for the Old Age Pension. The Department did not press for a penalty; they intended the case to act as a warning. KATAL ACCIDENT TO A DALGETY AGENT. :

Last evening a fatal accident occurred on tlie Main South road, near Tokuora school, when Mr Arthui Hobbs, aged 30, the district agent for Dalgety and Co., lost his life. It appears that George and Harry Hopkins, of Kopuni, were driving into Hawera in a gig, and they had juet reached the top of Wainongoroa Hill, when they noticed in the dusk a motor cycle approaching. The cvclist was then, according to a

statement made by Hopkins, on lilts right side of the mad. On coming within live yards of the vehicle, the cyclist apparently seemed to lose control of his machine, and crossed right over to the wrong side of the road. The occupants saw a collision was inevitable, but they were powerless to prevent it, with the result that the cyclist crashed right into the horse. Medical assistance was immediately sent for, and on arrival of Dr. Thomson he pronounced life to he extinct. Neither gig nor cycle carried lights. At the Political League Conference to-day a report was presented tracing the steps which led to the formation of the League in 1908. first with Mr R. R. Martin and afterwards with Mr C. P. Lindegreen, as organiser. Active steps were taken latterly to form branches, and in May, after the conference with Mr Massey, the Farmers' Political Protection Federation, of Canterbury joined forces with the League. Tn Auckland also n Provincial League had been formed, which had done good work. The report stated that the Native race was evincing a. desire to join branches, and it commended the good work of the Press who supported the party and the services of Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P. The report spoke of Mr Massey as the leader, and said that lie was imbued with a spirit of patriotism and Intent power.
