THE LIBEL ON SHANNON.

To the Editor. Bir,—With your permission, Sir,—With your permission, I on tho correspondence that lias appeared of late in your paper with, respect- to the good and bad points respectively of Shannon. lam quite prepared to admit tho accuracy of the statements put forward by the correspondent wlio essayed to take up the cudgels in defence of Shannon; hut still it must bo admitted there are some tilings that require improvement. The lighting of tho town is a matter that calls for much noeded attention ; no one, I feel sure, is prepared to deny such is the case. Then again, tho side-walks, or rather tho approaches to thom arc sadly in need of improvement-. Even in Plimmer i< t race—tho. main '<ln.ouglifare—it is scarcely safe to venture from tho sidewalk on to the road., or vice versa, in the dark, except at certain spots, the exact positions of which must he carefully horno in mind, otherwise the pedestrian is in imminent peril, of dislocating his ancle, or of sustaining more serious injury. A long-felt want in the town is a public reading-room to which one may have access at any hour of the day and evening. Those gentlemen arc to bo commended who are taking steps to secure tho old Post Office for such a purpose. Shannon may be slow (which I do not concede) but it is sure, and recognises' tho principle that the supply should not exceed the demand— which is sound business. When the increased population warrants it, houses and shops will be erected to meet the demand. This plan is preferable to the one obtaining elsewhere, namely that if erecting houses for a population that never comes, and starting business concerns to cater for the same nebulous population. —Yours, etc.. AOTEA.
