(Dug by “ The'Delver. ”)

Mr N. Blackmore, Palmerston North, suffered a severe loss last week when his three-year-old colt Jovial Prince died from inflammation of the stomach, after being on the sick list for a fewdays. The Laughing Prince —Thrift colt had his last race in the Rangitane Plate at the Manawatu meeting, and though he did not finish in a place he showed a lot of speed and looked like being a good winner this season. He was regarded as one of the best of his age at Awapuni, and the loss of his services will be a big blow to L. A. Pine his trainer, who had a very high opinion of him.

“Hector’s” First Winner. Hector Gray saddled his first horse as a trainer wlien he sent out Brilliancy at New Plymouth on Thursday last. Brilliancy started favourite, bui finished cutside a place. However, the one-time premier jockey had full compensation when on Saturday the Miteiielson Gup candidate Fersen scored -

Karl, who is engaged in the Guineas next Saturday, was ridden by M. Giimore, and P. Atkins had the mount on Mandamus. They took 14sees. from practically a standing start for the first furlong, but the quarter took them 26secs. and the half-mile was left behind in 50 3-ssecs. There was nothing between them at the finish, with Imin. 18 3-ssecs registered for the full distance. It was, writes a local track-watcher, as good a trial for the Guineas as any done hitherto, for Karl appeared to have something in reserve at the finish, and ho will be piloted by P. Atkins next Saturday. All going well in the meantime, he is to contest the Flying Handicap on Thursday, a race in which Red Manfred put up a sterling display prior to winning the
