Minister Approves the Ngaruroro Scheme

A total expenditure of £l4l was involved in maintenance and repair work on the rivers in the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board district last month. Detail? of the work done are given by the board’s overseer, Mr P. Scullin, in his monthly report, which reads as follows:—

‘ ‘ Tukituki.—Tennant’s Bend: To raising and strengthening bank, repairing fascenes and planting, cost for month £l5.

“Ngaruroro.— Pakowhai to Faindon; Clearing near Whakatu, cost for month £2l. Raupare; To repairing bank and clearing, cost for month £23. Fernhill: Clearing below bridge, cost for month £7. Old bed Ngaruroro: Clearing channel at Irongate, cost £4B.

“Tutaekuri.—Waiohiki to Brookfields: Planting, clearing and repairing fences, cost for month £27.

“In regard to the Ngaruroro scheme I would recommend that a motor truck be purchased for shifting tools, plant, material and patrol work in time of flood.”

Tho board decided yesterday to leave this matter to the works and finance committee.

Advice was received from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, giving his formal approval of work on the Ngaruroro river scheme, as required by section 4 of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Amendment Act, 1930, subject to certain conditions which the Minister set out.
