BASKETBALL

GAMES IN HASTINGS Lower Divisions in Form SCHOOL'S LUCKY WIN (By “Centre.”) There were no A grade games played in Hastings on Saturday. The B and 0 grade teams played under ideal conditions, and a high standard of basketball was noticed in some of the games. The West End B v. High School El game proved to bo most exciting, with the score very oven throughout. There were displays of clean, quick basketball —especially by West End team. The School team had an “off” day, as far as sure passing was concerned, and in tho centre and forward thirds almost one-half of the passes were misdirected. They were very lucky indeed to win 7 —6. The defence saved the day —they gave a splendid exhibition of sound and sure i>lay, and they gave very few opportunities to the West End forwards. Convent Bl team gave a good display of passing and speed, and overwhelmed the High School B2 team to the extent of 26 —9. High School forwards were weak, and kept continually behind their opponents instead of dodging to the front. M. Lane, for Convent, played a particularly good game as forward, her goal-throwing being very sure. C Grade Games. Convent Cl v. High School C 3 —This was a very one-sided game with the Convent team superior in all thirds. Their passing was sure and quick, while

Owing to lack of space the weekly notes of “Magpie” have been held over until to-morrow.

jmKsmraweramw that of the High School team lacked accuracy and finish. Convent won by a very large number of goals. High C2 (10) v. Convent C 4 (12).— A very even game, though Convent played a better type of basketball. The Convent centres R. Taylor, L. Devine, aud especially N. Watson were very sound and sure. M. Walsh was the best of Convent backs, the others being slow to take many a simple opportunity of interception. For High School It. Flowers and E. Laue did good work in forward third, while D. Epps saved time and again iu defence. Havelock (5) v. Convent C 3 (38). — Convent proved too strong for Havelock, scoring goal upon goal in quick succession. Havelock fought hard and showed improvement towards the, end. P. Slade, forward, and I’. Hantler, defence, played outstandingly. The Convent forwards played a pretty game and in the defence B. Hutton showed up well, while B. Ilalleron was a tower of strength. King’s Birthday Tourney.
