Rail Cars
(To the Editor.) Sir, —1 was pleased to note from your leader to-night that you had given the Railways Board some credit lor the innovation of the rail cur in this Dominion, firstly, because it is entitled to some credit and, secondly, because it settles an argument I had with a friend of mine. My friend, who follows politics very closely, told me that there had been nothing in the Cabinet Ministers’ speeches to indicate that the Railways Board had done any good for the country, and it seemed impossible to him that they could have had anything to do with the rail cars. 1 assured him that this same rail-car system which Cabinet Ministers now describe with pride as the “emblem of progress,” and the salvation of our national railways, was sponsored by the Railways Board. Actually the members of Parliament who presented the board with “running shoes” were now- swanking round the country in the “Maahanui” accepting the cheers of the populace and claiming the credit for the Government without even mentioning the initial work of the board. In my opinion this same Governmet which advocates a “fair go” for everyone could have extended the courtesv of some mention to the board. The whole business savours too much of showmanship to me and my friend says now that it is still evident that “truth is stranger than fiction.”— Yours, etc., FAIR SPIN. Hastings, June 16, 1936.
