SPEEDING PAST SCHOOL
Napier Solicitor Fined “Where the authorities estimate that 15 miles an hour is a safe speed for travelling past a school, it is absurd to expect the court to believe that a speed of 40 to 45 miles an hour is safe,” said Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Hastings Magistrate's court tins morning, when convicting Henry Lotton Sproulo (Mr. W. Selwyn Averill), solicitor, of Napier, on a charge ol driving past tho Mangaterctere school, on the Napier-Hastings main highway at a dangerous speed. He was fined £2, with costs 10/-. In evidence, Sproule denied that he was travelling at a speed greater than 30 miles hour. He said the brakes of his car were good urn) tbut he had a clear view of the road approaching the school. He pleaded not guilty, submitting that he had lull control of his car at tho locality. “Where there is a school, there is always a danger of children running out on to the highway,” said the Magistrate. “The motorists must pay attention to sign-posts and, notwithstanding tho delcndant’s good brakes, ho has no reason to come to this court with tho excuse that 30 miles an Imur is a safe speed past that school.” Convicted on a charge of speeding along Railway road. Keith Moise was fined £2 10/- with costs 10/-. He was prohibited from obtaining n driver’s license for one month. For driving without a license, he was convicted and fined 10/-, with costs 10/-. R. F. Wyatt was fined 10/- with costs, for driving without a license. For riding cycles at night «ithout lights George A. Robinson was fined £1 10/- and John W. Blackler £1 In each ease costs were 10/A fine of £l. with costs 10/-. was imposed upon Thomas W. Harris, lor driving an unregistered car. Frederick J. Hawley, who made a voluntary appearance on a charge of driving without a license, was lined 10/-. no costs being imposed.
