TARADALE AFFAIRS

Greenmeadows Drainage Question THE HOSPITAL RATE The monthly meeting of the Taradale Town Board was held last night. Present: Messrs J. Williaenson (chairman), J. Wainscott, J. A, Wilkinson, J. Gilmour, F. O. Anderson and G. Webb. The Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board advised that the levy for the current year would be £395 2/2. The cderk, Mr W. G. Jarvis, stated that it appeared that it was almost certain that the hospital rafe for he coming year would have to be increased by five-sixteenths of a penny in the pound making a total of fifteen-sixteenths of a penny. The rate struck last year was too low to provide for the full amount of the levy imposed by the Hospital Board, and the increase in the levy fer this year was approximately £4O. The Hawke’s Bay County Council advised that the residents -of Greenmeadows and Meeanee desired a further conference to discuss with the council the question of the drainage of the district. The council inquired if the board wished to be represented at such a conference. “We know the attitude that we intend to take up regarding this matter, and it would not be much use us attending, ” said Mr Wainscott. Mr Webb was of the epuion that uo harm would be done by the board hearing what was said on the 'matter. The chairman said that the board at such a conference would not be committed iu any way, .."d he agreed that there would be no harm in hearing what the others would have to say. Mr Wilkinson pointed out that the council in its letter had not ..idicated the matters that it was proposed to discuss. He suggested that the council should first acquaint the board of the matters that were to be raised before a representative was appointed to the conference. It was decided to reply to the council on the lines suggested by Mr Wilkinson. The question of granting permission to the Taradale Rugby Club to charge at the gates for certain matches to be played on the park was left in the hands of the clerk with power to act. The ranger reported that 42 head of stock were impounded during the month, 36 of which were .taken off roads in the Meeanee riding. The clerk reported that complaints had been received to the effect that certain people were making use of the board’s holding-paddock for grazing their stock which had been impounded. These people would be warned that if they did not remove their stock when requested to, the stock would be moved to the pound at Stortford Lodge, which would involve a 10-mile driving fee and additional impounding fees. The clerk and overseer in his monthly report stated that all the roads were in fairly good order. Improvements had been made at the intersection of Howard and Harvey streets to enable better- use to be made of the drainage. The footpaths from the Fallen Soldiers’ Manorial to Avenue road had been cleared of all growth, and it was to be regraded where necessary in readiness for a coating of bitumen during next summer. Acting on instructions from the board, the chairman and the clerk attended the sittings of the Rivers Board Inquiry Committee and gave evidence on behalf of the town district. A total of 252 drivers’ licences had been issued for the current year. The clerk pointed out that certain motorlorry owners were operating without having renewed their licences. The board expressed its thanks to iho chairman and the clerk for having represented the district at the Commission of Inquiry.
