CLUE TO SHOOTING
Bandits’ Second Offence MELBODRNE, June S. There was a startling turn at the week-end to the shooting of Superin tendent Brophy when, as a result of inquiries, the police claim to have estab lished that the man involved in the shooting was also one of the bandits who stole the payroll at North Fitzroy on June 4. Superintendent John O’Connell Brophy was shot in the face ana right arm on May 24. An oflicial police state ment declared that Mr Brophy went to Royal Park to try and catch cat ban dits, and was himself held up by two armed men who apparently recognised him. They fired three shots before Mi Brophy manipulated his own revolver, which had jammed. One bullet passed through Mr Brophy’s lower jaw. Another broke his right wrist and a third was deflected from his heart by his braces-buckle. Last Thursday three armed men held up employees of Gould and Porter, Ltd., boot manufacturers, at North Fitzroy and robbed them of the pal roll, £l4'lo The money was being brought from the bank in a delivery van when three masked men in another car forced tne van into the kerb, where they compelled the employees to hand over the money. The affair was watched by a pedestrian, who described it aw one of the neatest and quietest jobs possible
