THE URBAN AREAS Growth of Towns Between 1926 and 1936 INTERESTING FIGURES Census returns published in the May Abstract of Statistics, and given in detail below, show that w the inter-censal period from 1926 to 193j5 the population of the Hastings urban area increased from 14,623 to 17.959, an increase of 3336. In the same period the population of the Napier urban area increased from 18,330 to 18,689, an increase of 359. The two urban areas consist of Hastings Borough together -with the Havelock North Town District and the remainder of the urban area, and Napier Borough together with Tarariale Town District and the remainder of the area. An interesting coincidence is that the population of the Wanganui and Invercargill urban areas is exactly the same la the figures given below, the 1936 totals are subject to revision by the Census and Statistics Office. Maoris are included in each instance. Where boundaries have been altered since the last census adjustments have been made to compensate the alterations. In the 1926 total for Dunedin, 4490 visitors to the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition have been included, as they were additional to ordinary visitors. * The following are the various total*;-—
