ACUTE TENSION Exists In China
VARIOUS STORIES Reported Declaration of War Against Japan CANTON COUNCIL’S MOVE <By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 6, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, June 5. Various stories of the acuteness of the Cino-Japanese tension include a statement by the Exchange Telegraph Agency’s Hongkong correspondent that the Canton Council has declared war against Japan. This is probably a revival of the story cabled a few days ago. The British United Press correspondent at Canton merely records that the Cantonese Council met this morning and that reports are circulating that it decided to take the initiative in sending troops northward to oppose further Japanese encroachments.
Reuter’s Shanghai correspondent says that Japanesa nationals have been ordered from Tokio to prepare to leave Canton at a moment’s notice in case of emergency. Tho “Daily Telegraph’s” Moscow correspondent says that Moscow expects a tremendous anti-Japanese explosion iu China at any moment. Chinese circles declare that a new na-tion-wide boycott of Japanese goods is likely to be launched in a few days, prbably leading to drastic Japanese military action, which it is believed the Chinese would resist.
It is believed that Nanking cannot longer hold back mass pressure throughout the nation of the Chinese Youth Movement, which is backed by the Canton Government,
It is added that Russia may even actively co-operate with China against the Japanese. The “Daily Telegraph's” Tokyo correspondent says the newspaper “Niehl Nichi .Shimbun” repjorts an alliance between Russia and China was concluded early this year. Under it the Soviet interests in Outer Mongolia and Sinkiang will bo recognised in return for Russian support in China against Japan.
