RECORD INVASION

Americans in Britain NORMA SHEARER’S ROLE More than 200 American film stars will appear in British pictures during this year—a record Hollywood invasion (states a London correspondent). The most celebrated American star now in London is Miss Constance Ben nett, who is appearing in “Everything is Thunder’’ at the Gaumont-British studios with Mr Douglas Montgomery, also from the United States. Mr Eiehard Arlen, the latest arrival, has come to star in the GaumontBritish film “The Great Divide,’’ and to enter—he hopes—for the Amateur Golf Championship. I told him that Mr Douglas Fairbanks sen. had entered for the “Amateur’’ five years ago and was knocked out in the first round. He said, “Well, if I can’t do worse than ‘Doug.,’ I’m sitting pretty.’’ Another arrival is Miss Dolores Del Rio to take a leading part in “Accused’’ for Criterion films. .To filmgoers generally the most outstanding visitor from Hollywood this year may be Miss Norma Shearer, who wishes to make her next film, “Marie Antoinette,’’ in Britain. It is for this reason, I understand, that Mr Irving Thalberg, Miss Shearer’s husband, has sought release from part of his duties as producer-in-chief at the Mctro-Goldwyn-Mayei studies in Hollywood. Meanwhile Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are to produce four other important pictures in London with stars from the United States. Mr Lionel Barrymore may be expected about the end of May to appear in “Silas Marner.” Later Mr Robert Montgomery will come to London to star in “A Yank at' Oxford.” Ho is to be followed by Mr Robert Taylor, due to appear in “The Wind and the Rain,” and by Miss Luise Rainer and Mr Brian Aherne, who are to play in “Rage in Heaven.” Others to be seen in British films this year include Miss Sylvia Sidney, Miss Ann Harding, Miss Joan Bennett, Miss Maureen O’Sullivan, Miss Marlene Dietrich, Miss May Robson, Mr Chester Morris, and Mr Fredric March.
