THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
In gardens sheltered from frost potatoes cau be planted. Arran Chiet is one of the best croppers and blight resisting varieties. lhe potatoes should be spread out on a bag to allow the seed to sprout. If your garden will grow early potatoes what better vegetable could you plant than early peas. Dwarf Wm. Hurst is tho best first early pea maturing in 8 to 10 weeks. Bfoad beaus should be planted at once. Broad Windsor is ono of the best croppers. Sown now they stand a better chance of escaping the rust. Continue planting out cabbage and cauliflower plants and earthing up celery. Liquid manure applied every 10 days will help to force the growth during the cold weather. Carefully weed and thin out onion seedlings that have been sown too thickly. Sulphate of potash drilled along the rows will help to stimulate the growth. Sow the following seeds thinly in drills and thin out as required:—Parsnips, carrots, turnips, beetroot and silver beet. Use blood and bone as a topdressing, 2 oz. per square yard. Make preparations for fruit trees, strawberries, rhubarb planting. Clear and burn all rubbish and dead leaves lying on the ground and sow the spare patches ui green manure.
