CHARGES OF THEFT
Case in Napier Court
A direction that William Wallace Cliff-ord, who appeared before Messrs A. E. Bedford and F. J. Annan, J.P’s. in the Napier Police Court yesterday on two charges of theft, should be returned to the mental hospital at To kanui was made by the Bench. Accused, who was represented by Mr 8. H. Morrison, was charged with the theft of two sums of money totalling £7 5/6. Counsel produced a letter certifying that accused was a mental defective who had been released upon probation. It was necessary for him to be returned, and in such circumstances no plea could be entered. Detective K. Mills, who conducted the prosecution for the police said that after accused was arrested it was found that he was a mental defective. The report that Mr Morrison produced had been verified by tbe police. It was not of much use to proceed with tbe charges, and he suggested that the case should be adjourned sine dio aud that accused be returned to the mental hospital. This course was adopted.
